In-laws can be a valuable resource to a young family. They can provide emotional support, a pair of helping hands for young children and valuable wisdom. Some times, in-laws can also provide a link to cultural and family traditions that enriches a newlywed’s marriage.
However, a young couple is also going through a process of differentiating themselves from their respective families of origin and building their own family identity. In-laws may not understand this. Thus, a tussle of values, beliefs, and turf may emerge.
Such issues can be tricky and challenging to address as we need to strike a fine balance between our obligation to our own parents and to our spouse.
The primary focus of the therapy will be on setting healthy boundaries – how to do with sensitivity and clarity.
